Why Should Christians Care About Logic?

I was at a Christmas party a few years ago and someone walked up to me and began talking to me about my views on God. At one point in the conversation he asked the age-old question, “Can God make a rock so heavy that he himself can’t lift it?” Among other things, I mentioned that omnipotence does not mean that God can do what is logically impossible. Then the conversation abruptly ended as he said, “You can’t use logic to talk about God. God is not bound by the logic of Man!” Then he nodded his head and tipped his chicken wing at me as if to say “Gotcha!” and walked away triumphantly before I had a chance to say a word. Was he right? Is God bound by logic? Can God do the logically impossible?

3 Pleas for Preachers, From Martin Luther King Jr.

We don’t have a shortage of preachers today who can preach with the best of them. We have a shortage of preachers who are in tune with the least of them. Our preaching must not only address the issues of those in our churches; it must also address the concerns of those in our communities, in our schools, in the streets, in the barbershops, in the universities, in our country, in our world. Our theology must get low.

Looking for a Million $1 Apologists

Jim: That’s right. That’s how I really started out examining the claims of Christianity. I wasn’t a Christian until I was about thirty-five, and back in those days, I didn’t even know there was a field of study called apologetics. I was just presented with the person of Jesus, and I thought, well, I need to know, Do the gospels tell me something I can trust? And I just applied the skillset that I had for testing eyewitnesses. I’m usually working in cases that are old, which haven’t been solved. I worked cold cases, so that skillset actually came in handy. That’s the only technique I had available to me, that’s the only thing I knew in my professional work. So that’s the approach I took. It was very much an investigative approach from the top down.

On ‘Crashing,’ Christianity Was the Context, Now It’s the Conflict

’s season-two premiere took that religious context and brought it to the center of the show. Still struggling to find a steady job in comedy, Peter’s been rooming with his ex-wife’s former lover, working at Cold Stone (to one customer: “Chocolate with gummy bears…okay”), and bumming for stage time at an unpopular Manhattan club. He’s in a valley, your pastor would say. In a low moment, he Google Image searches “big boobs,” then debates turning off safe search. I cracked up.

Top 10 Challenges Facing American Christianity in 2018

2017 was a challenging year in many respects for American Christians. But, what are the most pressing issues that Christians will encounter in 2018? Here is my top-ten list that will discuss that very issue. In contrast to previous lists that I have presented, this list will only focus on American Christianity, particularly the theological issues that apologists and pastors will face in the year ahead. This comes from my observations from various social media discussion groups on Facebook, Twitter, and from various magazines, books, and television.

What Martin Luther King Jr. Can Still Teach the Church - Russell Moore

Why were the voices of the civil rights pioneers persuasive, not only to mainstream America but to conservative Christians as well? The most significant factor was the mode of their argument. Beyond pointing toward the arc of historical progress, leaders of the civil rights movement appealed to biblical orthodoxy and missionary zeal as they argued for racial equality. Indeed, as historian David Chappell suggests, the theme song of the civil rights activists was as much Just As I Am as We Shall Overcome. This was true of civil rights advocates within the SBC; progressive leaders including Foy Valentine, T.B. Maston and Henlee Barnette, each argued from decidedly conservative biblical concepts. But even so, nowhere were the biblical calls for equality and justice more clearly displayed than in the speeches and sermons of the movement’s most iconic figure, Martin Luther King Jr.

5 Life-lessons for Apologists from Martin Luther King, Jr.

Before the victory of brother is achieved, some will maybe face physical death, but we shall overcome. Before the victory is won, some will lose jobs, some will be called communists, and reds, merely because they believe in brotherhood, some will be dismissed as dangerous rabble-rousers and agitators merely because they’re standing up for what is right, but we shall overcome.

The Christian Difference Is the Foundation of Our Christian Duty

Christianity is distinct in the nature of its claims and the value it places on reason, intelligence, and evidence. Some religious systems are based purely on the doctrinal, proverbial statements of their founders. The wisdom statements of Buddha, for example, lay the foundation for Buddhism. Hinduism is based on the revelations of the ancient sages as revealed in the Vedas and the Upanishads . Confucianism is established from the wisdom statements of Confucius. In all these examples, the statements of these religious leaders exist independently of any event in history. In other words, these systems rise or fall on the basis of ideas and concepts rather than on claims about a particular historical event .

Can You Have Purpose Without God?

Introduction One of the more convincing reasons to believe that atheism is false comes from man's desire for life to have purpose. If there is no designer behind the universe, life in general, and our individual lives in particular, have no ultimate purpose, no goal to guide our decisions, no finish line to motivate us to keep running when things get tough. The way that pastor Rick Warren put it in his book " The Purpose-Driven Life " makes it quite clear: "Without a purpose, life is motion without meaning, activity without direction, and events without reason. Without a purpose, life is trivial, petty, and pointless." If life is truly pointless, then why should anyone want to endure the suffering and pain that life brings? If life is pointless, as atheism necessarily implies, then there is no reason to want to continue to live. This is, quite literally, an unlivable philosophy for life, and if atheism necessarily implies this philosophy, then atheism is not just unlivable, but completely incompatible with living. And if a worldview is incompatible with living, it cannot be true.

Apologetics Made Me a Much Better Thinker

"During the 2012 election, there were a few high profile ballot initiatives to decriminalize cannabis [marijuana], most notably in Washington and Colorado," he says. "I was familiar with all of the popular talking points and I wanted to hear something new. One morning, I was looking for the Libertarian publication Reason Magazine to get an alternative perspective. Instead, I stumbled across Stand to Reason , the apologetics group run by Greg Koukl. From there, I followed the footnotes to the scholarly literature and the rest is history, as they say."

Is Google So Far to the Left That it Has Lost Touch With Reality? | The Stream

This is certainly a scary proposition, given the power of Google. But is Google is so far to the left that it is virtually out to lunch? Does it largely exist in a parallel universe? Is Google is so far beyond politically correctness that it has abandoned reality? If the allegations of fired employee James Damore are true, the answer to these questions is yes. At least among many Google employees and executives.

Taking Care of the Poor: The Most Ignored Command in the Bible?

Trying to determine the Bible’s most commonly discussed subject is difficult. The Bible is a collection of writings assembled over the course of thousands of years, from multiple cultures and languages, in various forms. The writers shared a belief in one Creator God, and little else. That’s part of what makes the Bible such a riveting book.

The Reports of the Death of String Theory may be Greatly Exaggerated

In a recent podcast , Dr. William Lane Craig discusses my blog post about the book The Grand Design by Stephen Hawking and Leonard Mlodinow. In his remarks, Dr. Craig says that he is surprised by Hawking's reference to String Theory because String Theory seems to have some fatal flaws. I have heard from others that String Theory has not lived up to the promise it seemed to show about 10 or 20 years ago. In this post, I will describe what String Theory is, why some people think it may be in trouble, and some theological implications of String Theory. String Theory is a theoretical idea in physics that proposes that the most fundamental objects in the universe are one-dimensional objects called strings. In String Theory, the fundamental particles that we currently know make up the structure of the universe including leptons, quarks, and bosons, are composed of one-dimensional objects that are described as vibrating strings. Just as different vibrational modes of a guitar string will give different musical tones, so the different vibrating modes of the strings give rise to different particles.

Jesus said to the people who believed in him, “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” -John 8:31-32 @biblegateway

Dear Dr. King

Today, as I look at the gospel-weak white and black churches, I would say that both need a transcendent reference point in the sovereignty, supremacy, and centrality of God, expressed supremely in the gospel of Jesus Christ. God-centered, Christ-exalting, Bible-saturated churches where the gospel is cherished — these are the birthplace of the kind of racial harmony that give long-term glory to God and long-term gospel-good to the world.

Indeed, one of the series’ central concerns is the way in which relationships and experience can shape our beliefs. Without Scully’s skepticism, Mulder’s belief in the supernatural would not be as solid; without Mulder’s openness to possibility, Scully’s understanding of the world would not have expanded as greatly. As Mulder and Scully learn from and care for each other, they grow ever-closer to the answers Mulder has sought throughout his life. In season 11, Mulder knows the truth about much of what he questioned in the series’ early days. And yet, he still wants to believe—if not in the existence of the paranormal (much of which he’s had confirmed), then in the idea that society deserves better than what the conspiracies of the shadowy cabals he chases intend for us.
