What Martin Luther King Jr. Can Still Teach the Church - Russell Moore

Why were the voices of the civil rights pioneers persuasive, not only to mainstream America but to conservative Christians as well? The most significant factor was the mode of their argument. Beyond pointing toward the arc of historical progress, leaders of the civil rights movement appealed to biblical orthodoxy and missionary zeal as they argued for racial equality. Indeed, as historian David Chappell suggests, the theme song of the civil rights activists was as much Just As I Am as We Shall Overcome. This was true of civil rights advocates within the SBC; progressive leaders including Foy Valentine, T.B. Maston and Henlee Barnette, each argued from decidedly conservative biblical concepts. But even so, nowhere were the biblical calls for equality and justice more clearly displayed than in the speeches and sermons of the movement’s most iconic figure, Martin Luther King Jr.

Apologetics Made Me a Much Better Thinker

"During the 2012 election, there were a few high profile ballot initiatives to decriminalize cannabis [marijuana], most notably in Washington and Colorado," he says. "I was familiar with all of the popular talking points and I wanted to hear something new. One morning, I was looking for the Libertarian publication Reason Magazine to get an alternative perspective. Instead, I stumbled across Stand to Reason , the apologetics group run by Greg Koukl. From there, I followed the footnotes to the scholarly literature and the rest is history, as they say."

Why Should Christians Care About Logic?

I was at a Christmas party a few years ago and someone walked up to me and began talking to me about my views on God. At one point in the conversation he asked the age-old question, “Can God make a rock so heavy that he himself can’t lift it?” Among other things, I mentioned that omnipotence does not mean that God can do what is logically impossible. Then the conversation abruptly ended as he said, “You can’t use logic to talk about God. God is not bound by the logic of Man!” Then he nodded his head and tipped his chicken wing at me as if to say “Gotcha!” and walked away triumphantly before I had a chance to say a word. Was he right? Is God bound by logic? Can God do the logically impossible?

3 Pleas for Preachers, From Martin Luther King Jr.

We don’t have a shortage of preachers today who can preach with the best of them. We have a shortage of preachers who are in tune with the least of them. Our preaching must not only address the issues of those in our churches; it must also address the concerns of those in our communities, in our schools, in the streets, in the barbershops, in the universities, in our country, in our world. Our theology must get low.

3 Failed Naturalistic Attempts at Explaining Consciousness

Consciousness is the most conspicuous obstacle to a comprehensive naturalism that relies only on the resources of physical science. The existence of consciousness seems to imply that the physical description of the universe, in spite of its richness and explanatory power, is only part of the truth, and that the natural order is far less austere than it would be if physics and chemistry accounted for everything. If we take this problem seriously, and follow out its implications, it threatens to unravel the entire naturalistic world picture. Yet it is very difficult to imagine a viable alternative

Top 10 Challenges Facing American Christianity in 2018

2017 was a challenging year in many respects for American Christians. But, what are the most pressing issues that Christians will encounter in 2018? Here is my top-ten list that will discuss that very issue. In contrast to previous lists that I have presented, this list will only focus on American Christianity, particularly the theological issues that apologists and pastors will face in the year ahead. This comes from my observations from various social media discussion groups on Facebook, Twitter, and from various magazines, books, and television.

The goal of apologetics

The goal of apologetics is not merely to persuade one that a God exist. At minimum, if we succeed, then we have only acquiesced to convert humans into demons for even they believe that God exist (James 2:19).  As apologist we have many targets, applications, and contexts yet always one goal. We are winning people to Christ. We have intellectual focus but our main focus is to win people and not merely arguments. We do Christ and our mission great disservice if we answer objections in various realms and capacities yet relinquish a presentation of Christ. Will it always happen in the conversation at hand? No, but that should be our aim knowing tomorrow is not promised and that Christ may return at any moment

A Message of Justice and Hope From Martin Luther King

Dr. King closed his letter: "Let us all hope that the dark clouds of racial prejudice will soon pass away and the deep fog of misunderstanding will be lifted from our fear drenched communities, and in some not too distant tomorrow the radiant stars of love and brotherhood will shine over our great nation with all their scintillating beauty."

What Does Christianity Say About the Nature of God? Two Important Truths | Cold Case Christianity

All worldviews have distinctive beliefs characterizing and distinguishing them from other ways of viewing the world. Christianity is no different. When it comes to the nature of God, trinitarianism is a Christian distinctive. It has been affirmed by believers over the centuries, not as a random construct, but as a true reflection of the Biblical teaching. The best and most reasonable way to interpret what the Bible teaches about the nature of God the Father, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit is to conclude that God is one in essence and three in persons. As mysterious as this may be, it is the claim of Scripture. As exclusive as this claim may seem, it is the defining and distinctive teaching of the Bible. To reject the Trinity is to reject the clear teaching of the Scriptures. To deny the triune nature of God is to deny the claim of Christianity and to redefine oneself as something other than Christian.

21
The Christian Difference Is the Foundation of Our Christian Duty

Christianity is distinct in the nature of its claims and the value it places on reason, intelligence, and evidence. Some religious systems are based purely on the doctrinal, proverbial statements of their founders. The wisdom statements of Buddha, for example, lay the foundation for Buddhism. Hinduism is based on the revelations of the ancient sages as revealed in the Vedas and the Upanishads . Confucianism is established from the wisdom statements of Confucius. In all these examples, the statements of these religious leaders exist independently of any event in history. In other words, these systems rise or fall on the basis of ideas and concepts rather than on claims about a particular historical event .

Satan knows it’s stupid to attack Jesus Christ directly, so instead he attacks those who follow him. Satan uses the media and music and popular culture and anything he can to ridicule those who follow Jesus. He’s behind the voices saying, “Those Christians are out of date. They’re on the wrong side of history. They don’t know what they’re talking about. They’re bigots.” Here’s what the Bible says you should do: “ Don’t get involved in foolish, ignorant arguments that only start fights. A servant of the Lord must not quarrel but must be kind to everyone, be able to teach, and be patient with difficult people. Gently instruct those who oppose the truth. Perhaps God will change those people’s hearts, and they will learn the truth. Then they will come to their senses and escape from the devil’s trap” (2 Timothy 2:23-26 NLT).

Can You Have Purpose Without God?

Introduction One of the more convincing reasons to believe that atheism is false comes from man's desire for life to have purpose. If there is no designer behind the universe, life in general, and our individual lives in particular, have no ultimate purpose, no goal to guide our decisions, no finish line to motivate us to keep running when things get tough. The way that pastor Rick Warren put it in his book " The Purpose-Driven Life " makes it quite clear: "Without a purpose, life is motion without meaning, activity without direction, and events without reason. Without a purpose, life is trivial, petty, and pointless." If life is truly pointless, then why should anyone want to endure the suffering and pain that life brings? If life is pointless, as atheism necessarily implies, then there is no reason to want to continue to live. This is, quite literally, an unlivable philosophy for life, and if atheism necessarily implies this philosophy, then atheism is not just unlivable, but completely incompatible with living. And if a worldview is incompatible with living, it cannot be true.

Is Google So Far to the Left That it Has Lost Touch With Reality? | The Stream

This is certainly a scary proposition, given the power of Google. But is Google is so far to the left that it is virtually out to lunch? Does it largely exist in a parallel universe? Is Google is so far beyond politically correctness that it has abandoned reality? If the allegations of fired employee James Damore are true, the answer to these questions is yes. At least among many Google employees and executives.

27
Freedom and Free Thinking

Recently I’ve been working my way through Victor Reppert’s “C.S Lewis Dangerous Idea.” In Reppert’s book, he draws from C.S. Lewis’ ideas about man’s ability to reason and subjects them to philosophical rigor to produce a well-developed series of arguments which suggest that if naturalism is true then “reasoning” itself is likely impossible. In reading Reppert’s book I got the sense that his goal was not only to stand on the shoulders of giants but also to breathe new life into insights that had yet-to-be-explored potential. So, as I thought about it I found myself getting inspired. I decided to revisit the works of some of my favorite authors and speakers that I hadn’t read in a while to see if I could unearth a few gems that I’d previously overlooked. In a number of ways I’ve found this to be a worthwhile project.

Taking Care of the Poor: The Most Ignored Command in the Bible?

Trying to determine the Bible’s most commonly discussed subject is difficult. The Bible is a collection of writings assembled over the course of thousands of years, from multiple cultures and languages, in various forms. The writers shared a belief in one Creator God, and little else. That’s part of what makes the Bible such a riveting book.

If Evolution Were True, What Would Happen To Adam And Eve?

When I first read about this model many months ago, I really liked it. One thing that bothered me about it is that it posits that Adam’s descendants mated with non-human (i.e non-imageo dei) homo sapiens. This seems to get dangerously close to saying beastiality occurred, because although they were biologically identical to the image bearing homo sapiens (Adam, Eve, Cain, Able,) they were animals on a spiritual level. But as I reflected on it, I became more comfortable with it. First, even if this was technically beastiality, is that really any worse than the traditional explanation that Adam’s children all had sex with each other? Also, many Christians are trichotomous in their view of the human soul. So, to say that God could have created a human body with a soul but not a spirit (i.e the divine image) shouldn’t bother them. Since the spirit is a separate faculty altogether, I don’t see why God couldn’t withhold this faculty from all except Adam and Eve and the children they bore. And even on dichotomism (the view I gravitate towards), the Spirit is a faculty  of  the soul even though it isn’t a separate faculty altogether.

The Reports of the Death of String Theory may be Greatly Exaggerated

In a recent podcast , Dr. William Lane Craig discusses my blog post about the book The Grand Design by Stephen Hawking and Leonard Mlodinow. In his remarks, Dr. Craig says that he is surprised by Hawking's reference to String Theory because String Theory seems to have some fatal flaws. I have heard from others that String Theory has not lived up to the promise it seemed to show about 10 or 20 years ago. In this post, I will describe what String Theory is, why some people think it may be in trouble, and some theological implications of String Theory. String Theory is a theoretical idea in physics that proposes that the most fundamental objects in the universe are one-dimensional objects called strings. In String Theory, the fundamental particles that we currently know make up the structure of the universe including leptons, quarks, and bosons, are composed of one-dimensional objects that are described as vibrating strings. Just as different vibrational modes of a guitar string will give different musical tones, so the different vibrating modes of the strings give rise to different particles.

Awesome Advice for Aspiring Apologists

After his first talk I immediately purchased one of his books and went up to the long line forming at his merch table so I could get his autograph and ask him where I should begin as a youth pastor needing to answer tough questions my students were raising. Sean could see that I was interested in learning more about apologetics and using this discipline to strengthen the faith of the students in my youth group and to increase my evangelistic efforts. He told me as I began my journey that I was going to run into many roadblocks! He said I was going to be confused and constantly stumped time and time again. To my surprise, he told me not to be dismayed by these questions in which I had no answer. Rather, he instructed me to actually be encouraged by these questions…

Dear Dr. King

Today, as I look at the gospel-weak white and black churches, I would say that both need a transcendent reference point in the sovereignty, supremacy, and centrality of God, expressed supremely in the gospel of Jesus Christ. God-centered, Christ-exalting, Bible-saturated churches where the gospel is cherished — these are the birthplace of the kind of racial harmony that give long-term glory to God and long-term gospel-good to the world.

Indeed, one of the series’ central concerns is the way in which relationships and experience can shape our beliefs. Without Scully’s skepticism, Mulder’s belief in the supernatural would not be as solid; without Mulder’s openness to possibility, Scully’s understanding of the world would not have expanded as greatly. As Mulder and Scully learn from and care for each other, they grow ever-closer to the answers Mulder has sought throughout his life. In season 11, Mulder knows the truth about much of what he questioned in the series’ early days. And yet, he still wants to believe—if not in the existence of the paranormal (much of which he’s had confirmed), then in the idea that society deserves better than what the conspiracies of the shadowy cabals he chases intend for us.
