Moody Bible President and COO Both Resign, Provost Retires

Many academic institutions have a residence on campus for their president. [MBI] does not. Our board of trustees wanted [Nyquist] to live in close proximity to campus; however, our campus is located in some of the most expensive real estate in Chicago, so the board made it possible for [him] to live across from [MBI] with an interest-only loan at the market rate of 4 percent. [Nyquist] is therefore able to host students and student groups, helping him foster positive relationships with the student body, and generally be available for [MBI] business, which was the board’s desire. The terms of the loan are fully disclosed on [MBI’s] federal disclosure forms.

4 WOMEN IN APOLOGETICS – POW Apologetics

As one of the first few women in this field of study (in 1990), I felt like a misfit. I only knew of two other women in my MA program. Yet lately, God has raised up many women to pursue a working knowledge of apologetics. Some of these “everyday apologists” engage in God-conversations to share their faith in Christ, and when applicable, they offer solid reasons for the truth of Christianity (1 Peter 3:15). Other women have earned formal degrees in apologetics, and as a result, doors have opened for them to speak, teach, and write. For example, three women now serve as professors of apologetics at Houston Baptist University.

The goal of apologetics

The goal of apologetics is not merely to persuade one that a God exist. At minimum, if we succeed, then we have only acquiesced to convert humans into demons for even they believe that God exist (James 2:19).  As apologist we have many targets, applications, and contexts yet always one goal. We are winning people to Christ. We have intellectual focus but our main focus is to win people and not merely arguments. We do Christ and our mission great disservice if we answer objections in various realms and capacities yet relinquish a presentation of Christ. Will it always happen in the conversation at hand? No, but that should be our aim knowing tomorrow is not promised and that Christ may return at any moment

We finish the week with a question from a listener named Nancy. “Dear Pastor John, thank you for this podcast. Here’s my question. Can an unbeliever please God? If not, what are we to make of the account of Cornelius in Acts 10? Can you explain this to me? Thank you!”

Is Philosophy Dangerous For Christians?

The implication being that philosophy is bad or dangerous and that we shouldn’t go chasing after “speculations.”  What I want to explore in this article is that this sort of mind set is not only in opposition to the Bible, but that it is crippling the church at large as far as our effectiveness not only to reach out to those who aren’t Christians (as it makes Christianity seem deeply anti-intellectual and irrational when the Bible paints the opposite picture) but also to the overall growth of us as Christians as well.  Before we can examine whether the charges stick as far as philosophy being dangerous we need to first briefly examine what we mean by the word philosophy .

Will the Real Christian Gospels Please Stand Up? Part 1

You’ve probably seen the headlines before.  “New Gospel Discovery Shakes Christianity to its Core!”, “Gospel of Jesus’ Wife will Change the Faith Forever!”, “Four Bible Gospels not the Only Christian Gospels!”  Without fail, sensational headlines like this will always pop up when a manuscript discovery is made.  The challenge for believers is taking the time to sift through the grandiose claims for the truth.  As it relates to the idea of “Lost Gospels”, meaning books that speak of Jesus but are not part of the Christian New Testament, the truth is that in the first few centuries of the church, there were books written about Jesus in addition to the four Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.  For those who doubt the claims of Christianity, the existence of such books automatically proves that the depiction of Jesus in the New Testament can’t be considered as accurate and shouldn’t be considered as trustworthy.  But how should Christians think about these so-called “lost&rdq

20 Why Should Christians Care About Logic?

If you read the title and the article itself again, you may realize that it is a post TO Christians BY a Christian. The existence of the Christian God is assumed in “in house” dialogs between Christians. It is a letter explaining why Christians should not reject logic. It is not an argument about why the logical should not reject Christianity. You are simply trying to force the article to do what it was never intended to do.

Learn to Explain and Defend Your Religious Liberty

It’s being redefined as freedom to worship and believe what we wish, but not to live out those convictions in the public square, in our daily lives. That’s a radical redefinition because the fundamental principle of religion is finding what’s true about the world, and that informs our significance and guides how we live. Relativism and a new definition of pluralism have led many to believe that religion is a personal preference like ice cream flavors, but most religious traditions make truth claims about the world and therefore have implications for how followers live their lives. These become binding on our consciences. Thus, freedom of conscience and association have flowed directly from religious freedom because our lives are guided by our religious convictions.

The Religious Conflict at the Heart of Our Culture Wars

I did find Griffith’s account subtly but consistently biased in favor of the modernizers. To take a few examples: She bends over backward to rescue Margaret Sanger and her movement from their creepy enthusiasm for eugenics; Griffith delicately remarks that they were “caught up in the eugenic ideas then common among the white middle and upper classes,” which is a little like saying Al Capone was caught up in the glamorization of organized crime then common in Chicago. She mentions criticisms of Kinsey’s research methods without dwelling on them in great detail, producing a narrative in which Kinsey stands for honest and unbiased science against hysterical critics who want to cover up facts. Her history of abortion before the late 20th century is also lopsided, creating the impression that abortion wasn’t really controversial until the upheaval of sex roles in modernity made it so. And her account of the same-sex-marriage debate downplays theological and philosophical differences, instead portraying a battle between one group conceiving of “freedom” as “submission to clerical authority” and another group espousing the “freedom to love and behave ethically without fixating on gender roles.

Top 10 Challenges Facing American Christianity in 2018

2017 was a challenging year in many respects for American Christians. But, what are the most pressing issues that Christians will encounter in 2018? Here is my top-ten list that will discuss that very issue. In contrast to previous lists that I have presented, this list will only focus on American Christianity, particularly the theological issues that apologists and pastors will face in the year ahead. This comes from my observations from various social media discussion groups on Facebook, Twitter, and from various magazines, books, and television.

Why Is There Even A Jesus Myth Theory?

What way of checking do you require? I mean we have extra-biblical references to Jesus including archeological evidence. The archeological evidence suggests he was an important man. The extra-biblical accounts suggest he made an impact in the society of that general area. But of course, most importantly you had several first century Jews that abandoned their ancestral faith to follow a new belief system. A radical system at that, that told them to love their enemies among other things. Their number included a murderer that completely changed his life around. He went from killing Christians to sacrificing his life for the same belief system and worldview. And they were all ultimately tortured and killed for their beliefs with the exception of the apostle John who died a natural death but was still tortured prior to that and then exiled. You can, of course, claim they lied but usually in American courts anyway people are innocent until proven guilty. And generally to prove someone guilty you look for motive. What was their motive? A violent death? A poor life? (none became rich off this) The most likely explanation is that they truly believed what they were teaching.

Two Christian Leaders Have Branded Me 'Dangerous.' Here's My Response

To repeat: These hypercritics do not hurt me at all, since I live for God's favor, and His favor is more than enough. Plus, by His amazing grace, we are reaching more people today than at any other time in our ministry work, by far. (Any good that comes of this is all to His glory.) But these hypercritics do hurt many others, sowing discord, engaging in unequal weights and measures, and even rejecting wonderful biblical truths in the name of a hyper-narrow orthodoxy. In short, they have things totally upside down, majoring on the minors and throwing many health babies out with some bathwater. (In their view, there are no healthy babies in the bathwater.)

Evangelical Christianity: Returning to a Third Way in a Whacky, Polarized World

Third, our ways are not to be the world's ways. Eph. 4:17-19 urges us not to live as Gentiles do. We are not to mirror the world or its ways in going about engagement. When we do, we lose credibility and simply become another interest group vying for power. Too much of our engagement looks no different in style and tone than those we challenge. We need to do better than that. Some of the reason evangelicals have lost credibility is because they have lost sight of being a third way and look no different in tactics than the world. We are called to do better. We must do better. We must be different, a third way, to engage well.

Why is there something rather than Nothing? Leibniz’s Cosmological Argument

Why does the Universe Exist? Why Do we exist? Do we exist contingently or necessarily? What is the explanation of our existence? Is God the explanation for the existence of the Universe?   These questions are addressed in Leibniz’s cosmological Argument which is an argument that shows that God would have to be the explanation of the Universe. We can put Leibniz’s argument into five premises which shows that God is the best explanation of the Universe.   Premise 1: Everything that exists has an explanation of Its existence. Premise 2: If the universe has an explanation of its existence, that explanation is God. Premise 3: The Universe Exists Premise 4: The Universe has an explanation of its existence. Premise 5: Therefore, the explanation of the universes existence is God.   Everything that exists has explanation of its existence because otherwise science wouldn’t be possible because science look’s to explain why and how things exist. It looks to explain things and discover why reality is the way it is. If you deny premise one then you deny the scientific process, but I think most people agree with this premise.
