Resolved: To Read the Bible

But not every text functions to build our faith in the same way, and has the same effect for every one of God’s children in the new covenant. It is a wonderful thing to read all the way through the Bible. It is something that pastors and teachers in the church should strongly consider doing on an annual basis, to let all the Scriptural data pass before their eyes for continually informing their public theological claims. But this is not a yoke to be set on every Christian every year. Though it would be a good thing for every Christian to try at some point, or at least to have some multi-year plan in place to eventually get you through the whole Bible in some cycle.

4 Nostalgia | RZIM

Some years ago, when we were living in Cambridge, England, I remember reading a story that was so powerful. The story in the local newspaper had a woman in her senior years kneeling beside a plant, gloves in hand, and a smile as wide as could be imagined. In her hand, between her thumb and index finger, she held a golden ring. It was her wedding ring that she had lost fourteen years before; she had searched everywhere but couldn’t find it. This day as she was digging the soil to plant new flowers, her little trowel picked up some dirt and as she saw a glitter, her heart skipped a beat and she grasped at it to find her long lost ring. She was now widowed, but the ring as a symbol of unending love had done its work. She basked for several minutes in the nostalgia of bygone days and a love that would never die. With a twinkle in her eye she told the reporter she had always hoped that she would find it one day. Planting new flowers to bloom brought back a love that was never lost but had once again found its symbol.

7 Ways to Approach Your Bible in 2016

The Book of Psalms opens with a man whose “delight is in the law of the LORD” (Ps. 1:2). He can’t get enough of it. Likewise, the prophet Jeremiah confesses, “When [God’s] words came, I ate them; they were my joy and my heart’s delight” (Jer. 15:16). Even Jesus said the purpose of his words is to induce joy: “I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete” (John 15:11).

Advice for Another Year of Bible Reading

It’s a dangerous pattern for a Christians to read God’s word consistently without having their hearts stirred by what they have read. As much as it is in your power, strive not to walk away from God’s word without having at least one truth move your affections. If you finish your reading for the day, and nothing has moved you, pray and ask God to show you one little thing from what you’ve read that might have an impact on your affections. Stop and pray over that truth or reality. Slow down enough for it to convict, or encourage, or correct, or strengthen hope, or embolden action. Seek, with the Lord’s help, at least one truth that will engage your affections. Since changed hearts are the key to changed lives, may we prayerfully seek not only knowledge of God’s word, but also love for the beauty, wonder, and glory of that word.

And what better time to work on implementing new habits than the start of a new year?

20 Compelling Evidences That God Exists: Discover Why Believing in God Makes So Much Sense - Kindle edition by Ken Boa, Jr., Robert M. Bowman. Religion & Spirituality Kindle eBooks @ Amazon.com.

This book merely whets one's appetite. The arguments presented are truly compelling evidences for God's existence as the title suggests, but they lack the detailed substance that the topic requires. But readers are forced to dig elsewhere to resolve missing details. This entire book is like a preface to the real arguments. It's best feature are it's quotes, bibliographies and endnotes. These features lead the reader on to more meaty details. This book does a valuable service in introducing (scientific and theological) laymen to the true arguments and debates that surround the evidences presented here. The writing is geared to people who are just getting acquainted with the arguments. Folks with some study behind them will be disappointed. Look through the notes and bibliography and if you've read 50% of what's there, you can pass the book along to an uninitiated friend. However, another valuable service of the book is that it provides easy to remember analogies that readers can carry with them into discussions on God's existence. If you've ever been in a discussion and couldn't quite remember the facts of your case, their handy analogies will prove a big help.

One Gospel

— when any of that happens, I would like to make sure that you know that the gospel of Jesus Christ is not foreign to your life in that kind of turmoil. It’s not foreign or alien or irrelevant to that terror, or that tension, or sleeplessness, or confusion, or that stomach-turning atrocity, or that hopelessness, or uncertainty, or instability. On the contrary, the more horrible, the more foreign, the more startling, the more fearful, the more uncertain, the more stomach-turning the days become, the more relevant the gospel of Jesus Christ is.

6 Questions Preachers Should Ask of Every Sermon

The closer 11 a.m. on Sunday draws, the more the sentiments of John Piper’s words grip my heart and mind: “I am standing vigilantly on the precipice of eternity speaking to people who this week could go over the edge whether they are ready to or not. I will be called to account for what I said there.” Indeed. Every Sunday morning is an occasion for trembling and utter dependence upon the Lord, no matter how much I have prepared beforehand.

What do ancient non-Christian sources tell us about the historical Jesus?

1. He existed as a man. The historian Josephus grew up in a priestly family in first-century Palestine and wrote only decades after Jesus’ death. Jesus’ known associates, such as Jesus’ brother James, were his contemporaries. The historical and cultural context was second nature to Josephus. “If any Jewish writer were ever in a position to know about the non-existence of Jesus, it would have been Josephus. His implicit affirmation of the existence of Jesus has been, and still is, the most significant obstacle for those who argue that the extra-Biblical evidence is not probative on this point,” Robert Van Voorst observes.32 And Tacitus was careful enough not to report real executions of nonexistent people.

Not only will it mark the first time Guns N’ Roses have performed in years, it also appears that guitar legend Slash and frontman Axel Rose have buried the hatchet: There are rumors that the band is planning a full tour later this year. This year’s festival is scheduled for the end of April.

Do Muslims and Christians Worship the Same God? Perspectives from a former Muslim

24 Please Convince Me

1. The alleged inconsistency of pro-life apologists who support capital punishment is often introduced as a red herring to distract from the main issue that must be addressed. Even IF pro-lifers were inconsistent on this point, that’s all it would prove: an inconsistency. And what follows from that? Not much. It has nothing to do with the one question that must be answered in the abortion debate: “What is the unborn?” As Beckwith notes, “inconsistent people can draw good conclusions” ( Defending Life , 126).

Legacy Reading Plan - Christian Research Institute

Y ears: The overarching objective of the Legacy Reading Plan is to read through the Bible once a year, every year for the rest of your life. The reading calendar is naturally segmented into seasons and the seasons into months. At the beginning of each year you know that during the winter your focus will be on the Pentateuch and Poetry (249 chapters); in spring, the Historical books (249 chapters); in summer the Prophets (250 chapters); and during the fall, the New Testament (260 chapter). Each season is further broken down into months. Thus every January your goal is to read through Genesis and Exodus and every December the Synoptic Gospels and Acts. There are times when you will naturally read ten chapters at a time and others when you will read one or two. More importantly you will read the Bible just as you read other literature.

1 Peter 2:11–12, Part 3: Will Others Worship God Because of You?

The Bible says that some will be saved through the witness of our faithfulness. But how does that happen? What makes our living in line with the gospel compelling to nonbelievers? In this lab, John Piper explains how our good deeds win others to Christ.

Science Increasingly Makes the Case for God

In 1966 Time magazine ran a cover story asking: Is God Dead? Many have accepted the cultural narrative that he’s obsolete—that as science progresses, there is less need for a “God” to explain the universe. Yet it turns out that the rumors of God’s death were premature. More amazing is that the relatively recent case for his existence comes from a surprising place—science itself.

7 Unbiblical Statements Christians Believe

The fact that many Christians believe these unbiblical statements shows our unfortunate overall biblical illiteracy. Instead of swallowing popular statements hook-line-and-sinker, may we be like the Bereans in the Book of Acts. When they heard Paul preach, they wanted to research the Scriptures themselves to authenticate what he was saying: “They received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so” (Acts 17:10-11).

Reading the Whole Bible in 2016: An FAQ

Sharon, I’ve often had trouble with this too. The thing to do is to just let go of the details. If you find a passage you want to investigate more deeply, write it down so you can go back to it later. If you are detail oriented, I know it might be hard to skip things that don’t make sense yet, but keep in mind that the scriptures were given to average people, even those who are not gifted with great intelligence, as well as well-educated people to be understood. The benefit of an overview for those with greater erudition is to have a framework on which to hang the details when we go back to study them. But the even framework alone is beneficial with understanding all the details. There’s a beauty in this that we shouldn’t miss.

Star Wars: Childhood Revisited

C. S. Lewis once defined nostalgia as “our longing to be reunited with something in the universe from which we now feel cut off, to be on the inside of some door which we have always seen from the outside.” As great as the Beatles were, I wasn’t just after their music but a sense of the world I had lost. I wanted to remember what it was like to not feel cut off. Lewis goes on to say that to be “at last summoned inside the door would be both glory and honor beyond all our merits and also the healing of that old ache.” Living in a fallen world means realizing we have inherited “that old ache” and haven’t yet been summoned inside.

The Universal Problem We Don't Want to Admit

But the Bible doesn’t just accurately state the problem; it also reveals the only possible solution. Because of our moral failings, God’s infinite love compelled Him to add humanity over his Deity and come to earth in the person of Jesus that first Christmas. The incarnation was necessary because an infinitely just Being cannot allow sin to go unpunished. Instead of punishing us, God found in Jesus an innocent human substitute to voluntarily take the punishment for us.

When Achieving Your Dreams Doesn’t Make You Happy

When I returned to the states, I jumped back into school and began praying that the Lord would bring me back to that little Caribbean country. “Joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory” (1 Pet. 1:8). But what does that mean? Is it for me? How do I get it? What does it feel like? Is it okay for me to want it? Yes, there are answers to these questions. And Tony Reinke does a masterful job in providing them. Oscar Watch • The Revenant: Vengeance is God’s, and God Ain’t No Pacifist - Godawa

While I applaud the notion that vengeance is in God’s hands, it is important to understand that that does not mean that we can never kill anyone in self defense (Exodus 22:2-3). The main import of the Christian worldview is that the state punishes and executes, and that is how God achieves his justice. It is not some spiritual mumbo jumbo suggesting God will do so spiritually or circumstantially in the criminal’s life. It is the notion that the state is precisely God’s hand in the matter (Romans 12:19-13:5). This is why vigilanteism is wrong, because our first course should be through legal means. If the state is itself corrupt, then the moral parameters may change, but that is a different discussion for another movie (the issue of civil disobedience).

“ Even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these,” Jesus said as He recalled the beauty of a common lily (Luke 12:27). And I suspect that even Solomon in all his splendor could not have imagined the sheer affluence that you and I enjoy today. The lily is here today and gone tomorrow, so eeting and commonplace that we overlook its intricate beauty and fail to acknowledge the glory of the God who made and sustains it. Is it possible that we have grown so accustomed to our affluence that we have lost the wonder of it, too? Is it possible that our affluence harms us even as it blesses us?

The Folly of Atheism as the Absence of Belief in the Existence of gods | Innovative Apologetics

But ever since Sam Harris stumbled into an anti-theistic best-seller others have sought non-believing celebrity status, many atheists have struggled to raise the bar of coarseness as a means of joining Harris’ ride with the Four Horsemen of New Atheism, but their cruelty and name-calling only left them with no friends and the bitter truth that hell awaits them. It’s like being denied entrance to a sporting event after dropping your hotdog on the ground while waiting in line for four hours to see a ballgame. The atheist never had a chance and he loses more than he came to the show with. I especially feel this way today since many of the new New Atheists have given up as they declare atheism is not a worldview; it’s merely an absence of belief in God.

How Can Christ Be the Only Way to God? | Reasonable Faith

Now it would, indeed, be fantastically improbable that by happenstance alone it just turns out that all those who never hear the Gospel and are lost are persons who would not have believed the Gospel even if they had heard it. But that is not the hypothesis. The hypothesis is that a provident God has so arranged the world. Given a God endowed with knowledge of how every person would freely respond to His grace in whatever circumstances God might place him, it is not at all implausible that God has ordered the world in the way described. Such a world would not look outwardly any different from a world in which the circumstances of a person's birth are a matter of happenstance. The particularist can agree that people generally adopt the religion of their culture and that if many of those born into non-Christian cultures had been born in a Christian society instead, they would have become nominally or culturally Christian. But that is not to say that they would have been saved. It’s a simple empirical fact that there are no distinguishing psychological or sociological traits between persons who become Christians and persons who do not.
